Group Weariness and Group Negativism

Stefan Jern, Associate Professor

The general aim of this project is to explore negative attitudes and effects of working in group settings. Two initial studies have examined whether “group weariness” exists. Ongoing studies look for significant differences between individuals, who experience GW and those who don’t. Among other variables Locus of Control is considered of special interest and focused.

Toward a New Model of Group Development

Stefan Jern, Associate Professor and
Anders Hempel, Linköping University

This project questions the generality of linear progressive models for the natural development of groups. Empirical results show that no model is generally valid for project groups, and an alternative comprehensive model has been developed. This will be further explored through intensive multiple case studies of groups in differing contexts and with varying tasks.

What causes and sustains bullying in schools?

Stefan Jern, Associate Professor and Maria Heintz

This project aims at deepening our understanding of bullying, conceptualizing bullying as a group phenomenon, where conscious and unconscious processes influence the beginning, performing and survival of the behaviour. Thus, the understanding of bullying can increase through studies of different group processes in groups where bullying occurs, e.g. by relating the occurrence of bullying to group climate in the class.
